Microsoft Customer List

Updated by Andreea Mahu

You can create precise audiences of contacts based on activities performed, stages reached, or properties sourced from your CRM or enriched by Dreamdata using our Audience Builder. After creating these audiences, you can easily start sending them to Microsoft to be able to use them in your campaigns for ad targeting (Microsoft processing may take up to 48 hours).

You only need to set this up once - after the initial setup Dreamdata will automatically send any updates (removals or additions) on your audiences to Microsoft daily.

How to send an audience to Microsoft?

  1. On Dreamdata's main menu, navigate to Audience Hub -> Syncs and select Microsoft Customer List.
  2. Click the Enable button to connect your Microsoft account.
  3. Choose an Audience (contacts) and the Ad Account for which you want to use the Audience from the 2 drop-downs available and click Save.
After saving a sync, Dreamdata will send hashed Email Addresses to Microsoft for all contacts in your selected audience. If a contact has more than one email address, we will share any additional email addresses that exist.
The minimum audience size accepted by Microsoft is 300 members.
  4. You will be able to see a list with all saved audience sync settings and some properties:
    1. Ad Account name and ID - the name and ID for the selected Ad Account (click on the name to be taken to your audience details page in Microsoft).
    2. Audience - the name of the used audience (click on it to be taken to your audience in Dreamdata).
    3. Name - the name of the audience visible in the Microsoft Advertising Platform.
    4. Count - the amount of email addresses for contacts that are sent to Microsoft from the latest sync (audience count).
    5. Microsoft Count - the amount of members that match the audience in Microsoft. The count is for the whole audience and is updated as the synced audience gets updated, always reflecting the total amount of members.
As only hashed Email Addresses are accepted by Microsoft, the count shown here reflects emails that can be matched in the Microsoft ecosystem. Work email addresses may have lower match rates compared to personal email addresses. We send all available emails to increase the Microsoft Count as much as possible.
    6. Last Synced (UTC) - the time when Dreamdata last synced the contacts audience to Microsoft.
    7. Enabled - on means that we are continuously sending updates to Microsoft based on updates to the audience (decide if you want to pause sending updates by turning it off).
    8. Actions - delete the audience sync settings from Dreamdata (note: this does not delete the audience from Microsoft, you will have to do that directly in Microsoft; no more updates will be sent to the audience if the audience sync is deleted from Dreamdata)
  5. You're all set 🔥 data will be automatically synced daily for any changes in the selected audience.
Microsoft requires up to 48 hours for the initial processing of an audience.

How to view audience syncs Dreamdata created in your Microsoft Advertising Platform?

Go to Audiences -> Audience library and filter for the Type Customer match list.

How to associate a Dreamdata audience with an existing Microsoft campaign or ad group?

  1. Go to the Campaigns page -> Audiences tab, and then click Create association.
  2. Choose the campaign or ad group you want and select the Customer match lists filter in the Campaign targeting section.
  3. Select the wanted customer list from the overview and click Save.

If you want to create associations in bulk, go to the Campaigns page or the Ad groups page, make your selection and then click Edit -> Associate with audiences. Click Add targeting and follow the same audience selection process as for one campaign or ad group.

Troubleshoot

Can not connect Microsoft Customer List

If you do not see the consent screen

Or the following error appears in the URL bar for a short period of time:

The app is trying to access a service (Microsoft Advertising API Service) that your organization lacks a service principal for. Contact your IT Admin to review the configuration of your service subscriptions or consent to the application in order to create the required service principal

Solutions

  1. If you see the Approval Required screen when connecting:
    1. Enter justification for requesting this app
    2. Click Request Approval
    3. Contact your Microsoft IT admin to approve your request

  1. If the above Approval Required screen does not show up, contact your Microsoft IT admin. Your admin needs to grant access for Dreamdata Audiences app using a different method by following this help doc and grant tenant-wide admin consent. The tenant-wide admin consent URL follows the following format: https://login.microsoftonline.com/{organization}/adminconsent?client_id=1cbc5e4d-8f81-44b6-ade9-7a1582794ff2
    1. {organization} is the tenant ID. Find your tenant ID by following this doc
    2. The granted permission may take some time to propagate in Microsoft's system. If you are still unable to connect after the permission has been granted, we recommend trying again after 24 hours.
  2. We have observed rare instances where the 'Approval Required' screen continues to appear even weeks after your Microsoft admin has granted tenant-wide admin consent. This issue stems from an internal Microsoft system problem, not Dreamdata.
As a temporary solution, we recommend granting your Microsoft admin email access to Microsoft Ads and having them connect Microsoft Ads to Dreamdata. This approach has proven effective. Additionally, if access expires and you need to reconnect Microsoft Ads to Dreamdata a few months later, you can use a different email to reestablish the connection instead of your Microsoft admin
  3. Another solution is to invite a Gmail account to the Microsoft Ads platform, connect with Microsoft Customer list using that Gmail.
